- Rock Salt
Rock salt deposits can be found on every continent at various levels below the earth's surface. These layers of salt were formed millions of years
ago when the oceans that covered the planet evaporated and receded.
In the United States, the "Room-and-Pillar" method is used to mine rock salt. After an area of a given mine is carved out, geologists and engineers
determine where the next "room" will be, always maintaining a thick "wall" between "rooms" for support. Large machines undercut and drill at the
base of the face of the room wall and explosives are set. The salt that is blasted out in this manner receives a primary crushing and is conveyed
to the mine shaft and hoisted to the surface, where it may receive additional crushing and screening. It is then loaded into barges, rail cars, or
trucks for shipment and distribution.
- Solar Salt
Solar salt is a natural product originating from either sea water or salty lake water. In a highly-controlled process, salt water is pumped into
condensing ponds and then to saturating ponds where sunshine and wind cause evaporation to take place over a period of months, yielding a bed of
pure salt. The salt is then "harvested" from these beds, stockpiled, washed, and mechanically dried. It is then screened and packaged at the
St. Louis plant. Solar salt is an excellent water softening product because of its high purity and low cost.
- Evaporated Salt
This grade of salt is produced by a hydraulic process. Wells are drilled into underground salt deposits and water is then pumped into the wells
to dissolve the salt. The resulting brine is pumped to the surface for refining. This is the most common source of food salts as well as some
water softening salts.
- Agricultural Salt
This term describes a broad array of products including feed-mixing, block, granulated, and trace mineral salt; the latter providing many
necessary animal nutrients. Gunther Feed-Mixing Salt contains an anti-caking agent that eliminates moisture-related handling and storage
problems. In addition, Gunther's well-known brand "Blue Ribbon Stock Salt" has been well received in the market for many years.
