Gunther Salt’s Top 10 Frequently Asked Questions

Salt plays many roles in the places we live, work and play — and its applications can raise plenty of questions. Below, Gunther Salt answers 10 of the questions our team hears most often, covering everything from solar salt and feed-mixing salt to product sourcing and salt delivery near you.

  1. What is salt used for?

People usually think about salt’s culinary applications. However, salt is used for a variety of applications, including:

  • De-icing: Salt can be used to remove ice on sidewalks and roads during winter.

  • Feed-mixing: Salt can be added to livestock feed to encourage healthy intake.

  • Water softening: Salt can be used to remove hard minerals, such as magnesium and calcium, from the water supply.

  • Sanitation: Salt can be used to generate chlorine in a swimming pool.

For a full breakdown, read “From Barns to Backyards: The Uses of Industrial Salt in Bulk.”

2. Why is feed-mixing salt important?

Salt is a natural part of any living organism’s diet. It maintains the volume, pH, and osmolarity of bodily fluids, as well as muscle and nerve function. Put simply: livestock animals need salt in their diet to grow up healthy, strong, and ready to reproduce.

But not all products are up to the task. Low-quality salt tends to clump, preventing good flowability when using or applying the product.

Gunther Salt holds its product to the highest standards of purity. Our feed-mixing salt is screened for impurities and treated with an anti-caking solution — ensuring it mixes evenly and easily in your troughs.

3. What makes solar salt different from evaporated salt?

Solar and evaporated salts are high-purity products that differ in how they are made.

  • Solar salt is produced by pumping saltwater into shallow pools, exposing it to the sun, and allowing it to evaporate over time. Solar salt is then washed and dried, resulting in an optimum, cost-effective product for water softening.

  • Evaporated salt is produced by injecting freshwater into underground salt deposits, dissolving the salt to form brine, and applying high heat to remove water and impurities.

Generally, solar products are considered a more cost-effective alternative to evaporated products. Gunther Salt’s Utah Solar Salt is a naturally white, opaque, and high-purity salt perfect for water softening. It leaves fewer insolubles in your tank, requiring fewer equipment cleanings over time.

We currently offer bulk salt delivery for solar products — contact our team for more information.

4. When should I buy ice melt?

The best time to buy ice melt products is in August, September, and October. Buying during this time period generally helps you avoid product shortages, inflated prices and driving in the middle of a major storm.

Our winter salt products don’t expire, so you can stock up and store as much as you’ll need for the season.
